Use Outdoor Lighting To Extend Your Home Barbecues

By Marci Glover

During the summer, when there are more daylight hours, we feel more relaxed when we are outside. However, when the nights draw in we feel less secure because we are uncertain of where we are and who is close by. This is even true when we are in our garden, in the dark it all seems unfamiliar.

Even if you open your front door to somebody after dark, there is a good chance that you cannot see who they are, because there is nothing to illuminate their face. This is why it is a good idea to install some outside lighting. Outdoor lighting, as well as being practical, can also enhance the look of your home and garden.

These days there are many different kinds of lamps you can use outside. Some designs are extremely discreet, and no longer take the form of floodlights that used to dazzle people. If you have a walkway through your garden it would be a good idea to use lamps on the top of waist-high poles. To save on energy consumption, you can also get them so that they only work when somebody is nearby.

The way you intend to use the lights will have a great bearing on how best to power them. If you intend to use security lamps that are on throughout the long dark nights it would be sensible to connect them to the mains supply. However, if you are using them to make your garden safer to walk through in early evening, or to work with motion detectors, solar powered lamps should be adequate.

If you do not illuminate your outdoor spaces of your home, you will have to plan parties and barbecues so that they finish when the sun goes down. By installing subtle lights your parties could carry on well past sunset. Your guests would still be able to see each other, and the surrounding areas would be highlighted by well-positioned table and wall lamps.

The very same lamps could also be used as a security measure. You may choose to have them set on a timer, or have them fitted with motion detectors. The best time to install this kind of lighting into your outdoor spaces is when the area is being landscaped, and the designers can lay cables at the same time. However, if the garden is already in place, it is possible to install solar powered lamps. This also allows for flexibility of repositioning the light source, as required.

It is important to consider the light given out by your lamps if they are near public areas. Make sure that the lamps are positioned so that they do not dazzle people passing by, whether they are walking or driving. This could be very dangerous, especially if the lamp is operated by a motion sensor and flashes on into a driver's eyes.

You can find specialists who can help you with planning and installing outside lighting, though this could be expensive. If you budget is limited, you could choose solar powered lamps that are simple to position and economical. When you are happy that the lighting suits your needs you can make it more permanent.
