Advantages Of The Structural Web Process

By Marissa Velazquez

There are many methods that are used to manufacture plastics. Structural web method is one of them. It is also known as the gas assist method as it makes use of nitrogen gas in the moulding process. It requires low pressure conditions to curve out thick wall cross sections that are used for other various purposes. The surfaces produced are always smooth and consistent as they do not have any sink marks, thus of high quality.

The process is a very precise one. The plastic resin is injected into the mold cavity. Afterwards, the nitrogen gas is introduced into the cavity so that it can push the plastic that has been molten out to the cavity walls. The best thing about using the gas is that it uses the least resistant parts of each plastic, hence creating hollow sections with different wall thickness.

This method is different from the structural foam where a chemical blowing agent is used. This agent is mixed with the polymer melt which results in an expansion. This is done at a low volume to increase the time for expansion, and at a low pressure. Therefore, the result is a strong and rigid component that does not have any sink marks.

There are many advantages of using the gas assist to make plastics over all the other alternative processes. First, the resulting products are usually guaranteed to have quality surfaces and appearances with no sink marks. This increases the aesthetic value of a product as this is more attractive and appealing to consumers. Moreover, they can be coloured in the desired way and textured as is necessary.

Also, these products weigh less than the other products from the other procedures. This is not to mean that they are not as strong, as they are equally as rigid and can support a lot of weight. This also translates in less cost of the material used as the amount of weight needed is far less. This enables the manufacturer to be able to transfer the saved costs to other processes.

This method also produces parts from many different kinds of resins. It may not be confined to a specific type as it is flexible enough to accommodate all kinds of plastics, from the normal and common ones like polyethylene, to those that are engineered. This makes the process have an edge over the normal injection molding, as it cannot handle some of the resins or additives.

The gas assist method may be a fairly new method in the industry thus may involve quite a lot of costs when initializing it. This, however, translates into profits at the end because the products are very beneficial. Also, the time cycles used are shorter than the others, thus it takes less time to come up with the products.

It will be important for you as a manufacturer to understand this process so that you can compare it to all the other processes. The benefits of the structural web present totally new limits and possibilities in the industry of plastics. Therefore, it would be the best especially where a lot of savings need to be made, and the resultant products need to be cosmetically appealing.
